Bipolar disorder is a psychiatric disorder that causes alternating episodes of mania and depression.

This presentation provides basic education about the nature of the disorder and helps in understanding the need to take medication over many years.

Stuart A. Montgomery, MD, FRCPsych, is Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at the Imperial College School of Science and Medicine, University of London. He has worked for many years on identifying, measuring and elucidating the underlying mechanisms of depression and the anxiety disorders. Professor Montgomery has served as a consultant for, and is on the advisory boards of Lundbeck, Wyeth, GlaxoSmithKline, Pfizer and Roche. He is the Editor of European Neuropyschopharmacology and International Clinical Pyschopharmacology and the co-author of the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale, in addition to 26 books and over 400 papers to his credit. Professor Montgomery is one of the founders of OCD Action, a charity for people with Obsessive Compulsive Disorders.
